Anti-Spam Measures

Hi Gang, This is a very nice system but you all should be careful of the growing number of spiders out there who hunt for email addresses from sites that display them openly on web pages like this. It's crummy that this has to happen and I know you're all getting tired of the "Viagra" and "Horny Housewives" messages so we might consider a way to encode the address using some kind of script so that it can be viewed by the user (maybe a graphic mode or something) but it can't be collected by these SPAM robots. Just a few thoughts. Keep up the good work.. --Rick

Hi Rick, This is an interesting issue. Certainly, it would be possible to use the "filter.words" functionality to replace @ with " at " or something similar. And, of course, these things can be hidden in realms (so you have to register for use of the site, etc), but it is very difficult to totally hide such info. Still, something for the "to think about" list. Thanks for the visit, and the idea.

Sure thing.. I've seen others in the past use mal-formed addresses like rickwagner[at]mac.com isntead of the real deal and most of them say that it's cut down on their junk tremendously since the average human can figure out how it's suposed to apear but the spam hunters can't. The sad part is if it's locked into one format on conferweb it's just a matter of time before the robots figure out a way to add more "If.. than... else... " code to their systems to squash the concept. Hopefully this silly behavior will change in the future but for now I'm getting pretty tires of the Viagra and Cialis adds and I'm sure others are too. Either that, or we have more "erectile dystunction" on this planet than anyone knew.. <snicker> Thanks...
